A R T S T A T E M E N T, in Lay Terms

My Art is what you make of my narcissism. My art comes from conversations and experiences, in my own life; there is no designated point of destination, though there is certainly a launch pad of a particular set of time-bound moments.

Since the viewer and everyone else involved in art has as much a stake in artwork as the artist, I would like to remain the launchpad and not the referee nor the mediator.

In effect, my art is that of creating performative (relational) objects that stand in for me for conversations. Performative not in the traditional art historical sense of having some performance in its nature per se, but performative in the sense that it does what I do: stand as the launch pad for conversation. Regardless whether the conversation be between you and yourself and the art object, or between you and guests you host, or you and still others.

Materials: As a result of my narcissism and loyalty to conveying feelings and thoughts from conversations and experiences, I have no loyalty to materials or manners of rendering. All the skills and materials are simply tools to convey information. The tools themselves become part of the communication; when I choose to paint, I choose acrylic for reasons different from oil. When I choose to draw, I choose charcoal for different reasons than graphite or micron pen. The medium conveys just as much information as the concepts and emotions; I never choose mediums and methods out of mere convenience. If the viewer knows some history or cultural background on the mediums and methods, it can add to their understanding of the visual conversation being had. But I will not go out of my way to bring this to your attention beyond this artist statement.

Relationship: I strongly believe that once the artwork is out of my hands, it is no longer mine, but ours. Something shared. Ownership at that point only occurs in terms of where it is stored by the trade of trusts in the object's travel and maintenance, through fiscal commitment on paper.

Influences: I am inspired and so admire the masters as well as amateurs throughout the trajectory of art history. There is no particular artist or artist movement that I claim loyalty to, or that my art directly stems from alone. My art is a continuation on the trajectory of art history as a whole--not just a certain segment of art history. This is the result of being a curious global citizen in the current era.
